Our answers to your questions
We participate as a team in the "Formula Student" competition. This involves developing and building an electric and autonomous racecar every year, with which we compete against teams from all over the world in summer competitions.
Typically, the season starts in September after the competitions. In the first few months, we deal with the development of the new vehicle before the production phase starts in December and January. From then on, the components are turned into reality either at our workshop or at external partners. At our workshop, the CFRP production in particular is carried out by the entire team, and the finished vehicle is then typically presented to all friends, partners and the public at the rollout in May. This is followed by the test phase, which is used to optimize systems and prepare us optimally for the events coming up in July and August, where we compete with teams from all over the world.
On our page " Vehicles " you can find all the information about our racecars from the past years.
If you are enrolled at one of the Aachen universities (RWTH or FH), you can apply to us. Please have a look at our current job offers and apply with the application form, which you can find at the bottom of the page. We will get back to you as soon as possible after your application.
Our experience has shown that a time commitment of about 15 hours per week is necessary to be able to work through his tasks in a meaningful way. However, this varies depending on the task and the phase of the season. Especially in the hot phases of internal production, before the rollout and before events, it can be a bit more. At other times of the season, however, the task load can be less.
In general, you have to familiarize yourself with every task in our team and a high level of motivation and the urge to learn new things is more important than previous technical knowledge. Nevertheless, certain previous knowledge is required for some areas of responsibility. It's best to take a look at our job postings and ask us directly if you have any doubts.
Since we are a student team and are financed exclusively by sponsorship funds, we unfortunately cannot pay our members a salary. However, you will gain a lot of experience that you won't get during your studies.
Unfortunately this is not possible, because as a team from Aachen we can only accept students from RWTH or FH Aachen. However, there are Formula Student teams at most German and European universities. So feel free to look around at your university.
It is prescribed by the regulations that (in order to participate in all disciplines with all attempts) we must provide 4 drivers who are also registered students. As a rule, these are members of our club. The drivers are selected by comparisons first in karting and later in a Formula Student car.
Formula Student events take place all over the world. However, for logistical reasons, we only participate in the European events (e.g. in Spain, Italy, Austria and Germany). The events last about 5 to 7 days.
The teams are evaluated with their vehicles in 5 dynamic and 3 static disciplines and can achieve a total of 1000 points. The supreme discipline is the endurance race (Endurance EV, Trackdrive DV). Before being allowed to participate in the dynamic disciplines, the vehicle must be checked in electrical and mechanical scrutineering to ensure fairness between the teams.
You can find everything about the different disciplines here.
These are the class designations that represent different categories at the competitions. EV stands for "Electric Vehicle" and refers to vehicles with an all-electric drivetrain that are driven by a driver. DV stands for "Driverless Vehicle." Vehicles that complete all disciplines completely autonomously. Our DV race cars are converted EV vehicles from a previous season and therefore also fully electric.
However, since the 2021/2022 season, these two categories have been merged by Formula Student Germany, which writes the European regulations, and we are developing only one vehicle per season that completes all disciplines both with and without a driver.
Especially in the last years we could perform very successfully at the Formula Student events.
In the summer of 2021, we were able to achieve the first overall victory in the club's history: We managed the overall victory in the EV class at the Formula Student Austria at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. In addition, we achieved a second place at the Formula Student Italy in the DV class and two fourth places at the Formula Student Germany and a third and fourth place at the Formula Student East in Hungary. In the summer of 2023, we achieved the first overall victory in the EV class at the Formula Student Germany, the most prestigious event in Europe, where we prevailed against more than 70 teams. In addition, we took 7th place at Formula Student Austria and first place in the Statics at Formula Student East in Hungary.
Of course, Formula Student is a competition in which every team wants to win. Nevertheless, the relationship between the teams is very friendly and people help each other when there are problems. During your time in Formula Student you make a lot of contacts and find friendships with people from all over Europe and the world. This makes up the incomparable Formula Student spirit.
